"The players have worked tremendously hard to get us into this position of being safe with a game to go.It was another difficult game but we got the result we wanted.

"At this level work-rate comes first and foremost.I felt that when I arrived we weren't particularly well organised at the back, so we sorted that out and have also looked more effective going forward I think so I'm very pleased.

"Chesterfield are a very good side and they've been towards the top of the table for most of the season and have just missed out on the play-offs so for us to beat them shows our character. We were under pressure at times and they were passing it about quite well but we had spells as well and at this moment in time I'm delighted with the win and what it means.

"A lot of these players can really play.If we can defend well and get up the pitch and play our football in the final third then we can be as good as anybody else in this division.Obviously we were a bit edgy at times because we needed a result but for 90 minutes the lads worked their socks off.

"There are a lot of young players in the squad, Gareth Evans got the winner for us, Izak Reid had a great game, we had young Rooney on the bench and Shaun Brisley too who has been excellent in the last few weeks and he's only 17.

"When we took over a lot of people thought we were on our way down and it looked as if we had a big job on our hands but the players have very quickly taken on board what I wanted from them and every one of them has been a credit to the club.

"We were without Brisley and Cresswell who have been excellent recently and we still defended well and kept a clean sheet.

"There will certainly be one or two making their debuts next week now we're safe.We won't be going there just to relax and roll over because that would be disrespectful to the other teams in the league but the likes of Rooney will play next week and it'll be a chance for them to show me what they can do.

"Like every squad I believe we need to bring in five or six players. You have to ask yourself when you're looking at potential players if they are better than what you've got and if they are then you see what you can do."
