The Silkmen come away with one point following their trip to Gay Meadow
Brian Horton started with the same eleven that won at home against Carlisle just 48 hours before. Shrewsbury got off to the brighter start with their left winger Richard Evans making some nice runs down the left and been able to play some good balls into The Silkmen's box.
Shrewsbury kept the pressure on in the first 10 minutes, they had a number of set-pieces in good areas but unfortunately Richard Hope's decent headers went just go over the goal. After about fifteen minutes The Silkmen started to play some good passing football with Whittaker, Navarro and Sandwith all linking up well only to see the move get cleared away to safety.
Both teams started to play their own game but because of that they were cancelling each other out with neither keeper having much to do. Shrewsbury had the better chance of breaking the deadlock when a good ball that was played into the back post was met by Kelvin Langmead who's header went straight at Fettis.
The Silkmen took the lead just before the half hour mark with their first real attempt on goal, the ball was worked down the left by Whitaker who had space to cross the ball to the back post to find Bullock, whose shot went back across the box finding Clyde Wijnhard unmarked and able to put the ball past Joe Hart and make it 1-0.
After the goal The Silkmen looked like adding to the lead after impressive work from Bullock who broke into the box but before he could shoot Sagi Burton came across and in for a tackle. Shrewsbury kept pressing forward looking to get on back level terms before the break. Just before the whistle Shrewsbury's best chance came when a corner from Jamie Tolley was swung in and found its way to the former Macc player Neil Sorvel whose cross was headed at goal only for Fettis to make an easy save.
Into the second half and Shrewsbury came out fighting pushing The Silkmen back all the time, the home side came close to scoring only to see it cleared off the line but ended up conceding a corner. From the resulting corner the ball was flicked on by Kelvin Langmead only to see the ball hit Dave Morley on the hand and with the referee Mr Curson on the stop he wasted no time in blowing his whistle and pointing to the spot.
Sagi Burton placed it on the spot hoping to but the home team level and then drove his shot hard and low to Alan Fettis' left, Alan was able to get a hand to the ball but the power of the shot was to hard to keep out.
Both teams went looking for the winner, Horton made a substitute bringing Kevin Sandwith off and replacing him with David Beresford in the 64th minute, not long after the sustitution Shrewsbury keeper Joe Hart had to be on his toes after The Silkmen won a free kick when Clyde Wijnhard was fouled about 25 yards out. Danny Whitaker took the free-kick only to see his attempt go straight at the wall, but the ball came back to Danny whose second shot was hit well but Joe Hart was across his goal to save the ball.
Shrewsbury's best move of the game came after David Beresford lost the ball in the middle of the pitch, Evans picked it up on the left and ran at The Silkmen back line after beating the full back he whipped a lovely cross into the box to find the run of an unmarked Hurst who was leaning back and his shot went over the bar and out of the ground.
With just a few minutes left Brian Horton made The Silkmen's second substitution by bringing on John Miles and for Martin Bullock. Shrewsbury looked as though they were going to take all three points when a nice move down the right led to a ball that was put across the face of The Silkmen's goal, Langmead powered in towards goal but his shot was well saved.
During extra time The Silkmen had their final chance to win the game with a number of shots one after another but with a bit of last ditch defending it was down to keeper Joe Hart to collect the ball and with that the final whistle was blown.
