JOHN ASKEY

NOW
John joined Macclesfield Town from Milton United having previously been at Port Vale quickly establishing himself in the senior side and was a regular member of the Macclesfield team who completed a non-League treble in the 1986/87 season.
He represented England at semi-pro level and played for Middlesex Wanderers during their tour of Japan. Breaking his leg in a pre-season friendly match at Winsford prior to the 1995/96 season he was sidelined for the whole year but returned to play a valuable part in the Conference Championship side which won promotion to the Football League in 1997.
Having won every non-League honour other than the FA Trophy, John added a Division Three runners-up medal in the 1997/98 season. Equally at home on the right wing or as a striker John was a skilful player who used the ball intelligently with his highest goal scoring season coming in 1999/2000 with a tally of 15 goals in all competitions. Well liked and respected by the fans he has been affectionately nicknamed either "Gentleman John" or "Sir John" such is his standing with the supporters and was awarded the "Player of the Year" trophy for the season 1999/2000.
He played his final match on 3rd May 2003 coming on from the substitutes' bench in the home match against Rochdale to score as he had done in his very first match for Macclesfield in 1984.
John became manager of the reserve side and in his first season took them to the Avon Insurance League Division Two championship. As well as reserve team manager John was the first team coach and was appointed assistant manager to David Moss for the 2003/04 season and was given the caretaker manager's role on the departure of David Moss in November 2003, appointed manager in December 2003 returning to the assistant manager's position at the end of March 2004 on the appointment of Brian Horton as manager.
